Royal Ballet of Cambodia's Debut Is Expected in January

The debut of Neang Watthana Devi, the latest production of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, is planned for January. It has been already staged in Switzerland and the UAE.

The opening night will be on January, 18, at the Chaktomuk Theatre Hall in Phnom Penh with two more premiere performances on the next day. Public performances of the Cambodian Royal Ballet is a relative novelty of the latest decade as historically, the troupe performed exclusively during sacred rituals. This captivating classic ancient Cambodian art form definitey needs more exposure to the public – now tickets are available via via Last2Ticket and at the French Institute of Cambodia.

The new production pays tribute to French artist Auguste Rodin. The famous artist and the father of modern sculpture was fascinated by the performance of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia when the troupe performed in Paris in 1906. Some of the most valued of Rodin's drawings were inspired by those Khmer dancers.

At the press conference at Raffles Hotel Le Royal Phnom Penh earlier this month, Princess Norodom Buppha Devi, who also trains the dancers, said: “I’m very happy to work with these talented artists. We’re so excited to bring this amazing performance derived from the 1906 Royal Ballet to show the Cambodian public and foreigners so that they can understand more about the Khmer Royal Ballet.”
