Vietnam town begins cyclo sightseeing tours

The Vietnamese town of Bac Lieu has just initiated a cyclo sightseeing service. The southern town’s Culture and Tourism board says 20 cyclo-drivers have been draughted into a team which will take tourists on tours of the local attractions.

The board’s vice director, Nguyen Vu, said that the drivers had received specialised training in customer service and international languages. He added that the cyclos would only be transporting tourists to the sights and that there would still be official tour guides at the principal ones.

Bac Lieu is a coastal location situated around 220kms south of Ho Chi Minh City. Its main sights include historic mansions, Xiem Can Pagoda, colourful temples and orchards of succulent fruits. Beaches and mangrove forests line the coast a few kilometres from the town.

Cyclos are a kind of tricycle taxi found in many Vietnamese cities. They are similar to Indian rickshaws but differ in that the driver sits to the rear of the passengers. A ride around town sitting in the front of a cyclo is a quintessential item on the itineraries of visiting foreign tourists in Vietnam.
