Bangkok names parks for Loy Krathong venues

Bangkok authorities have named the 28 city parks where residents and visitors can celebrate the Loy Krathong Festival this coming Thursday. The park venues for the annual cultural extravaganza include Santi Chaiprakan, Lumpini and Chatuchak.

Senior Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) environmental director Suwanna Chungrungroeng told media representatives that the park celebrations would be family orientated. The director continued by saying the celebrations would focus on the traditional means of marking the festival.

One of the core activities at Loy Krathong is to launch a small watercraft, a krathong, made out of banana leaves in to a river or pond. Director Chungrungroeng said revellers should only use krathongs fashioned from natural materials and not styrofoam ones.

The director said the BMA wanted vendors at the parks to sell only natural krathongs. The director finished off with the statement that firecrackers were barred from the parks for the duration of the festivities between 15:00 and 24:00 and vendors would be actively encouraged not to sell them.

Lumpini is Bangkok’s best known park and is just a stone’s throw from Silom Road and Patpong. Santi Chaiprakan Park enjoys a picturesque location beside the Chao Phraya River and is a short walk from the backpackers area centred around Khaosan Road.
