Myanmar to increase e-visa entry points

The director of Myanmar’s immigration ministry has told reporters that the number of e-visa entry points to the country is set to be increased. Speaking to media reporters on Friday, Muang Muang Than said the government planned to eventually add six more immigration points where tourists would be able to enter with visas applied for online.

The immigration director continued by saying that international visitors would soon be able to use e-visas to enter Myanmar at airports in Naypyitaw and Mandalay. He continued by saying that four official immigration crossings on the national border with Thailand would also be authorised for e-visa usage.

The four crossings on the Myanmese border are at Kawthaung (or Victoria Point as it was known under British colonial rule), Htee Khee, Myawaddy and Tachilek. Muang Muang Than finished off by saying that trials would be held at the two airports and, once these had been successfully completed, the overland crossings would come next.

Myanmar officially launched its e-visa system on 1 September 2014. Yangon International Airport is currently the only entry point which recognises e-visas. The system enables travellers to apply for their visas on the Myanmese Immigration Ministry’s website. The cost is US$50 and it takes five days to issue the approval letter that tourists present at the designated entry point.
