The new railway line between Thanon Chira Junction, the main railway station of Nakhon Ratchasima, one of the largest cities of Thai northeastern region, and Khon Kaen, also in Isan, is being tested. When ready, the 179 km rail link will have 18 stations with two of them – elevated stations, and pass through 86 tunnels and elevated crossings.
In the meantime, the Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organization has conducted trial runs of the city's brand-new elevated train system. Kohn Kaen Skytrain, similar to the one in Bangkok, will help battle traffic congestion in the city. Besides, its elevated platform is expected to become a new popular city landmark. Normally, Khon Kaen Skytrain will become fully operational in February the next year. The 5-km elevated train will run along Khon Kaen's main roads including Lao Nadi Road, Ban Kok Road, Srichan Road, Thanon Prachasamoson Road, and Lang Soon Rachakarn Road. The locals who used to be rather sceptical about the project during construction are now anticipating its official lauch.
