Myanmar to promote Inle Lake tourism

Myanmar’s Tourism Ministry says it plans to promote Inle Lake as the country’s new up-and-coming holiday destination. Minister Htay Aung told media representatives that the ministry had already fine-tuned its management plan for the mountain region around the lake in Kayah State.

He continued by saying that the exact details of the promotional campaign would be released later and the ministry would contact some international agencies for support on the project. The minister also stated that the president understood that the primary draws of Inle Lake and the Shan Hills were their pristine natural setting.

Htay Aung finished off by saying that there were no plans to spoil vistas in the locality by building massive hotels. The ministry has previously stated that Myanmar recognises it has to conserve its natural and historic attractions to ensure tourists still want to visit.

Inle is the second biggest freshwater lake in Myanmar and for decades has been a favoured place for international travellers to relax and gain insights of the nation’s heritage. A boat trip is very much a part of the Inle experience and this time of year is best as water levels are higher immediately after the end of the rainy season.

Inle Lake is one of the 12 holiday hotspots included in Myanmar’s master plan to gain a stronger share of the global tourism market. The other destinations include the old capital city of Yangon, Mandalay and the beach district of Ngapali.
