The long lasting reaserch looked at 1,222 male executives who were born between 1919 and 1934 and recruited for a special businessmen study in 1974–1975. All of them had at least one risk factor of cardiovascular disease, including obesity, smoking, high level of cholesterol, etc. 610 participant were randomly chosen for a control group. They led their usual lifystyle and received usual medical treatment.
Interestingly, neither aerobic physical activity nor a healthy diet recommeded for the intervention group of 612 participants influenced positively their longitivity: in the course of 15 years the number of deaths in the intervention group exceeded the death rate in the control group.
The follow-up was extended to 40 years and finally helped reveal that the participants’ work, sleep, and vacation time were the key factors. The shorter the vacations (the harder the work), the higher are the chances to die young. Taking over three weeks of vacation reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular factors by one third. The research showed that keeping a healthy diet and excercising regularly unfortunately will not compensate for working too hard and not taking holidays.
Why wait? Plan your holiday right away!
