Bangkok public transport fares to rise

Thailand’s transport ministry says the cost of travelling in Bangkok by taxi and on its underground rail network is likely to rise. Government minister Prajin Juntong said that fares were supposed to increase on the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) on 2 October, but this has been put back to the start of the New Year.

The minister said the government had held discussions with MRT officials. He said the outcome of the talks was that the MRT had agreed to hold off on the fare increase on the underground network until 1 January. Standard ticket prices for single journeys will increase by up to THB2 then.

Air Chief Marshal Juntong continued by saying that the transport ministry had looked into the petition by the city’s taxi drivers asking for fare increases. He said the ministry would issue a decision early next month and this would be based on how much the national energy ministry hiked the price of NGV gas.

Air Chief Marshal Juntong said his ministry had weighed up the position from the aspects of both taxi-drivers and their passengers and believed an increase was in order. He finished by saying that fares for metered taxis would probably go up by about 10 per cent and the exact percentage would be determined by the new cost of NGV.
