Signed in 1971, Ramsar convention is an international treaty aiming at conservation of wetlands around the world. Today, the list of Ramsar sites includes over 2,300 wetlands in different countries - from the United Kingdom where the highest number of Ramsar sites is located (170) to Bolivia, home to the most expansive wetlands (140,000 square km).
Stung Sen wetlands strech along the southeastern shores of Tonle Sap lake and form a natural habitat for a great variety of water fowl, mammals and fish. It covers an area of 93 square km. Almost 30 percent of Cambodia is covered by wetlands and Stung Sen became the fifth area to be mentioned in the Ramsar list. The other four sites were designated in October, 1999 when Cambodia became a contracting party to the Ramsar convention of wetlands. They are Boeng Chhmar and associated river system and floodplain in Kampong Thom province; Koh Kapi and associated islets, in Koh Kong province; Middle stretches of the Mekong River north of Stoeng Treng in the name sake province; Prek Toal in Battambang province.
