The Andhra Pradesh tourism department has announced they are making efforts to put the lake area on the tourists' maps once again. Today the beautiful freshwater lake washing the foothills of the Eastern Ghats remains mainly a local well kept secret serving as a welcome getaway from urban life.
The lake stretches all the way from Munagapaka to Atchutapuram mandals and covers a total area of 1,832 acres. It is a favourite spot with migrating birds which flock there during European winters thus making Kondakarla Ava a prime destination for bird-watching.
Beside an abundance of birds, the lake area boasts rich other aquatic and plant biodiversity. To protect it, the whole lake area will be proclaimed a bird sanctuary. To get the best of the Kondakarla Ava, plan to visit between November and February when feathered dwellers arrive in numbers.
