The Minamiza Theater is a primary kabuki theatre in Kyoto first opened in 1610. With over four centuries of history it is one of the first officially licenced kabuki theatres in Japan. Kabuki is a classic Japanese dance drama. During the performance, the performers wear elaborate make-up, sing and dance. In 2005 kabuki was proclaimed an intangible heritage by UNESCO.
Since 1929 the theatre resides in the current building of the traditional Momoyama-style exterior design featuring a gabled roof. A traditional turret marks the official approval of the government. In 2016 the theatre was closed for refurbishment.
What has changed after the refurbishment? The exterior is mainly retained and it is the theatre equipment including the modern stage mechanism that has been renovated. There are removable chairs added on the first floor which can be taken away if necessary thus extending the stage. The first production after the facelift will run for two month after which the program will change every month.
