Kampung Sungai Melayu – A Quick Escape to Nature from Johor

The first thing – well, two things! – that come to your mind on being asked 'Why go to Johor?' are 'crossing the border to or from Singapore' and 'visiting theme parks'. Getting closer to nature in Johor? Impossible! Or wait...

Sitting just a 15-minute drive away from the city centre, Kampung Sungai Melayu is your personal slow paradise of mangrove forests fringing tranquil river shores.

The highlight of the visit if definitely a tour to the floating mussel farm. Hire a boat and get you transported there to witness first-hand where those juicy mussels come to your table from.
From the farm, set on for a walk to the mangrove forests offering soothing peace and quiet. Or if you feel like fishing, try your hand in catching fish or crabs.

After having enough of beautiful scenery, head to the village itself to enjoy its traditional kampung house architecture and do some shopping – from locally crafted souvenirs to dried mussels (of course!). Sometimes there are cooking demonstrations held in the village where you can sample local dishes or participate in a workshop.

It's a great day trip for families, too: let your kid see the world is not made of Lego only.
