The meteorological department says that while the northern half of the country will bear the brunt of the storm, other regions including around the Andaman Sea coast will also be lashed by storms. The department has already warned waves in this area could reach four meters in height and small boats should remain in port.
The weathermen also cautioned residents and tourists to be careful in parts of the country that are prone to flash floods and landslides. At the height of the storms, the weather forecasters say rainfall will measure eight millimetres per hour.
Kalmaegi swept through the northern half of Luzon Island in the Philippines on Saturday. Winds were recorded at 130kph and were blamed for swamping a stalled passenger ferry with 100 people aboard.
The typhoon will blaze a trail across Japan, southern China and Vietnam before it hits the Lao-Thai border. The monsoon season across Southeast Asia typically runs between June and early October and heavy downpours are normal.

Meteorologists have warned that heavy rainfall is expected across Thailand later this week. Thai weather forecasters say that Typhoon Kalmaegi will hit the north and northeastern regions of the country on Thursday or Friday.
