Meet 10 Most Important Tourism Cities, WTTC Version

The top 10 world’s most important tourism cities were named in the annual Cities Report by the World Travel & Tourism Coulcil (WTTC) at the WTTC Asia Leaders Forum in Macau on October, 22.

The 72 world’s most important tourism cities covered in the report together generated over USD625 billion contribution to GDP in 2017. The report looks at the cities from the point of view of tourism market size and job creation. The top-10 of these two lists differs, but some cities are featured in the both including Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, Mexico City and Shenzhen. China has the highest number of its cities mentioned in the Cities Report. The majority of the cities (9) in the job creation list are from Asia, while in the tourism market size list there are 5 Asian cities.

Currently almost 54% of the world's population live in cities and the number will only grow. This trend leads to the rise of city tourism all around the world. Slightly below a half of all the travels made every year are city travels. 

Highlights of the report:
1. The fastest growing city in 2017 was Cairo with Macau being a close runner-up.
2. China has the highest number of its cities among the 5 fastest growing cities over the past ten years: Chongqing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou.
3. Shanghai tops the ranking of the largest cities by travel and tourism volume in 2017.
