Today is D-Day for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

Today is the day of the official opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. After the opening ceremony it will open for normal traffic, too.

The bridge is a part of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge-island-tunnel complex. It goes all the way from the east to the west sides of the Pearl River Delta in South China. The total length of the complex is 55 km including a 6.7 km undersea tunnel. The construction of the bridge cost 120 billion RMB (17.3 billion USD) and took almost 12 years to complete.

The long waited for bridge complex will facilitate considerably travel between Hong Kong, Macao and Southern shores of China, boosting tourism, flow of goods and services. It is an important step in enhancing the economic development in the Greater Bay Area.

While currently the most popular way to travel between the three destinations connected by the bridge complex is ferry, the bus link between Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai in China will now be a matter of a couple of months at worst.
