Formely known as Billiton Island, Belitung was the place where the Australian mining giant BHP Billiton was born. Surprisingly enough, it is also one of the most picturesque and beautiful islands in the Southeast Asia. Boasting pristine white sand beaches washed by turquoise sea, Belitung attracts snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts from around the world.
Leebong Island, Tanjung Kelayang and Tanjung Tinggi offer pristine beaches not inferior to the best world-class beach destinations but without that annoying tourist hustle. The new direct service from Singapore confirms that Belitung probably will not remain this charming sleepy paradise for long.
Currently Belitung can be only reached by a direct flight from Jakarta and Pangkal Pinang. The other way to get to the island is by ferry from Jakarta, Cirebon, Pontianak, and Bangka.
Now Garuda Indonesia will offer four scheduled flights a week between Singapore and Belitung – on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
