Mandalay to Get New Modern Bus Terminal. But It Is Not Sure Yet

Mandalay may get arguably the most modern bus terminal in the country – at least the design of the upgrade for the Chan Mya Shwe Pyi (Kywel Sel Kan) bus terminal was finally submitted the last month – and evoked a lot of contraversial feedback.

The new version of the Chan Mya Shwe Pyi bus terminal will have five floors and cover 6.1 hectares, out of which 3.3 hectares will be completed and fully equipped by 2020. The expansion will require at least US$170 million investment part of which will be financed by a Hong Kong company. Parking lots for buses and arrival areas will be located on the ground floor; upper floors will feature bus departure gates, shopping arcades, hotels, waiting halls for the passengers and private parking zone.

The new design evoke critisims from the part of the bus operators who resent that their requirements have not been considered. They fear that the upgrade of the terminal will cause confusion for passengers – though both the resent and fear look more like resistence to changes. Yet the major concern which does look grounded is that during the expansion period passengers will have to use temporary terminal which normal capacity does not exceed 400 passengers but which will probably be used by 4000 passengers a day.

Mandalay is the second lagest city in Manmar and its bus terminal has been in bad need for expansion for quite a long time.
