It's getting harder and harder to find off-the-beaten-track activities these days with even those secret corners of the earth that used to be the ones not so long ago now invaded by hordes of tourists. Yet swimming with thousands of jellyfishes remains relatively unheard of type of activity. Though the jellyfish is of harmless variety the whole experience is indeed intimidating and definitely unusual.
Getting to Kakaban island is an adventure in itself. You need to fly to Tawau in Sabah where to catch a connecting hour-long flight to Tarakan in East Kalimantan from where a three-hour long speed boat ride brings you to Maratua Island, the gateway to Kakaban island.
Kakaban Island is not the only place where you can experience jellyfish swim. Some other destinations include the Raja Ampat archipelago off the Indonesian province of West Papua and Cruz Island in Zamboanga, Philippines. Palau, which till recently used to be the main destination for jellyfish swimming, has announced the closure of the jellyfish lake due to environmental issues.
