Train between Myanmar and China will remain just in the plans

The promising project for the construction of the railway between Myanmar and China will not come true. The connection of the industrial hub in Arakan State with China was considered unprofitable and dangerous for the environment.

The promising project for the construction of the railway between Myanmar and China will not come true. The connection of the industrial hub in Arakan State with China was considered unprofitable and dangerous for the environment.

Since the announcement of Myanmar's memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Chinese state-owned enterprise to construct a railway from Kyaukphyu, on the Bay of Bengal, to the Chinese border and to Kunming (Yunnan Province in China) no progress has been made.

Gas pipelines and roads were constructed on that route, but construction of the 1,215-kilometer railway, which costs US$20 billion, may take 50 years! Now industrial and residential zones are under construction along the route.
