India Remains Main Tourist Source Market for Sri Lanka in 2018

Foreign tourist arrivals continue to grow in Sri Lanka with the main tourist source region remaining Europe: in 2018, 44% of all overseas visitors came from European countries.

Europe is closely followed by Asia and Pacific with their 42% of tourist footfalls, far superior to the third and fourth places occupied by visitors from the Middle East (7%) and America (6%), with less than 1% coming from Africa.

Nationwise, India, a close neighbour and traditional source market for Sri Lanka still tops the ranking of the most frequient travellers to Sri Lanka having supplied 14% of all tourist traffic in 2018. But will it last long with China being a close runner-up with their 13% and 12% of the British travellers?

Arrivals of Canadian and American tourists are on the rise showing 21.4% growth and so are arrivals of guests from Australia and New Zealand with 28.4% surplus. While the numbers of Indian visitors to Sri Lanka grow, the total number of tourists from Asia remains fairly the same as during the revious year. Among the Europeans, the citizens of the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and France choose to travel to Sri Lanka more often than other nationalities; while Russia and Ukraine top the list of East European visitors.
