5 Must-Eat Dishes in Indonesia. 5 National Dishes!

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism will declare five dishes national dishes of Indonesia. Till today, there has been no official dish or food in the country and this move will right this wrong.

There is a great variety of local delicacies on the islands of the archipelago, so the choice was not an easy one. Now meet the Big Five: soto, an aromatic soup of broth, vegetables and meet; rendang, a spicy meat stew in coconut milk and spicies; nasi goreng, the famous fried rice, also with vegetables and meat; satay, seasoned grilled or scewed meat; and gado-gado, also known as lotek, an Indonesian salad. Three of these dishes have been earlier mentioned in CNN's rating of the World's Most Delicious Food, and soto has been voted the national dish of Indonesia by five local ministries and agencies.

As culinary tourism has become a pronounced travel trend of the latest decade, Indonesia is ready to attract foreign tourists through Indonesian food, too. The Ministry of Tourism is working on certifying separate foodies destinations for foodies which boast unique culinary traditions and flavours. Three first such destination have been already named: they are Bali, Bandung and Yogyakarta. The Ministry is also considering the plan to promote Indionesian restaurants abroad to make people around the world familiar with Indonesian food.
