Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila in Need of Decongestion

The government wants more airports within an easy reach from the the National Capital Region, Manila, the Philippines. New airports should help decongest Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the main air haven of the Philippines.

Last year alone, Ninoy Aquino International Airport handled 42.5 million passengers while its official capacity does not exceed 31 million pax. The airports which could be used with the purpose of taking the burden from the NAIA include the already existing Clark International Airport in Pampanga and Sangley Point in Cavite while there is also a plan to build a new airport worth PHP735 billion in Bulacan

The approval and implementation of this multi-airport plan is given green light and will be fast-tracked as much as possible as the growing number of tourist arrivals to the country suggests the project is quite urgent. Yet taking into consideration the financial side, any construction of the new airport is unlikely to start before the end of the year. In the meantime the expansion of Clark airport is due to be completed by 2020. It will allow to increase the capacity of the airport to 12 million passengers.

When all the three additional airpots are ready to handle passenger traffic, the total capacity of the National Capital Region airports will baloon to 65 million pax per year.
