Travel between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville to Become a Whisk with a New Highway

Yahoo, Cambodia is likely to get its first highway soon – the beginning of the construction is due to start in November this year. Can't wait to make a test-drive!

Currently there is no highway in Cambodia, only national roads. Even if there have been a considerable improvement in the pavement and overall quality of roads during the last five years, they are still far from the international standards. The majority of the roads now have one lane in each direction separated by lane marking and no central reservation.

The first highway will connect the capital city of Phnom Penh with the seaside resort town of Sihanoukville. The total length of the highway will be 190 km, 50 km less than the existing road between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. It will originate at Tom Nop Kop Srov street where national roads 4 and 5 merge. The government promises to pay compensations to the land owners affected by construction of the highway.

The estimate cost of the project is USD2 billion and it will take four years to complete. The main contractor is China Road and Bridge Corporation.
