The new airport will be located in the northern part of Goa in Pernem region and will take the burden from the Goa's currently sole international airport which is sitting close to the coast in the central part of the state in Dabolim. Last year it handled about 8 million passengers but since 2016 there has been a steady 18%-23% yearly increase in tourists footfalls resulting in the airport's functioning at the edge of its capacity.
Construction of the new airport will be divided into 4 phases with gradual increase of passenger capacity. Mopa Airport will have both passenger and cargo terminals. Goa's officials are sure that the construction of the second airport will help attract more tourists to the state thanks to facilitation of travel and better transport availability.
