Visiting India in August? Monsoon brings rains – and some of the most important cultural and religious festivals to the country. Plan to check at least one of the festivals listed below.

On August, 15th, India commemorates the day the country got independence from the British in 1947. The Independence Day is a national holiday and is celebrated nationwide but the best place to be is Red Fort in Delhi where you will be able to see an impressive parade.

Madras Week is a week-long celebration of the city's birthday. Founded on August, 22, 1639, Madras was renamed Chennai and often dubbed Detroit of India. It is the fourth-largest urban colglomerate in the country full of temples, beaches, museums and much more. The best dates to come is August, 19th and August, 25th to take part in two nature walks.

On August 13-14 and 28-29, Teej unites married women worshipping Shiva and Parvati in Jaipur. The festival consists of three parts, two of which are in August this year and the third one falls on September. 

A unique Hindu brother and sister celebration, Raksha Pandhan is dedicated to love, longitivity and prosperity. This year it falls on August, 26th and can be enjoyed country-wide.

The famous harvest festival of Kerala, Onam is an epithomy of colourful rituals. Expect a lot of music, elephant processions and floats decorated with Ramayana and Mahabharata characters. It will last from August 15th to 27th.
