All the violators of the law will be fined though the amount of the fine has not yet been stated. Rumour say that one of the reasons which has promted the ban are numerous beer drinkers occupying the footpath along the river in Panjim and thus worsening the image of the whole state, according to the authorities.
Yet another hike of fines concerns those littering and using plastic bags on the beaches and around the city, also effective from August. In fact there will be a generous – we do not say 'hefty' as we actually welcome this step – fine hike for plastic bags users from mere INR100 to INR2500 (USD35). The authorities also asked the local devotees who habitually throw flowers into the river performing a traditional merit-making ritual to refrain from throwing flowers in plastic bags as they clog the river and thus do harm to the ecology of the state.
