Mukdahan, Thailand May Get Its Own Airport Soon

A study of feasibility for construction of an international airport in the city of Mukdahan located in the northeastern part of Thailand by the border with Laos is to be conducted soon.

Currently there is no airport in Mukdahan, the nearest sky harbours on the Thai side for those wishing to fly to and from the area being Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon, both at about 100 km further north. There is also the Savannakhet international airpot just 22 km away sitting on the other side of the Mekong river in Laos.

Yet the regional authoritites feel that Mukdahan has a strong potential for an international airport. In future Mukdahan will probably become a special border economic zone within an easy access of the Lao city of Savannakhet. The feasibility study for building the airport will start soon and should be completed before March, 2019. By March, the location of the new airport should be chosen and the length of the runway determined.

Mukdahan airport may become handy for those travelling to central and southern parts of Laos as though Savanakhet does have its own airport now, it is served exclusively by Lao Airlines with airfare far superior to what regional and Thai low cost airlines offer for similar flights within Thailand.
