Hail Tuk-Tuk, Motorbike Taxi or Autorickshaw Ride Via App in Phnom Penh

With Grab and similar taxi services now available in Phnom Penh it is getting easier to navigate the Cambodian capital. Alongside with the international players there is a locally developed PassApp – let us have a look if it is worth using instead.

The guys from PassApp are betting on traditional local means of transport. They started almost at the same time as Grab entered the Kingdom last year but chose to rely on a fleet of autorickshaws which could be hailed through their application. Early this year, usual tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis have been added to the list of transportation means available. In the course of one year the service has earned popularity and won the hearts of regular customers thanks to competitive prices and convenience. Yet if you decide to go local with them consider a couple of points the customers tend to complain of:

– No special training is provided to the drivers who use the App. To register as a driver one has to show in and – well – just register. No certification of the skills is necessary.
– As a result, many self-proclaimed drivers do not obey traffic rules. Severe violations like running red light are common.
– Not all of the drivers are familiar with the city – oh this issue looks to be universal with taxi drivers around the world! – and rely on maps and GPS but often fail to figure out the right route even this way what very often leads to loosing time.
– Some drivers still tend to discuss the price confirmed via the App after the ride. This is also common in several countries of the region like e.g. Indonesia.

Yet the service looks both promising and relatively reliable. If you decide to give it a try let us know your comments!
