Lakshadweep islands located in Laccadive Sea off the southwestern coast of India are the smallest Union Territory of India. The name of the group means 'One hundred thousand islands' in Sanskrit and is very depictive.
To protect the fragile ecosystem of the islands, a permit system has been introduced. Foreign tourists have been only allowed to visit some of the islands and now this list will be extended to include 12 more islands. The administration of the islands intends to promote holistic development and niche tourism in Lakshadweep. Some of the islands which soon will be accessible for visitors are Bangaram, Cherium, Suheli, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Tinnakara, Agatti, Bitra and Chetlat.
The only Lakshadweep airdrome is located on Agatti island which is a gateway to all other islands of the group. From the mainland, Agatti can be reached by direct flight only rom Bangalore in Karnataka and Kochi in Kerala. Currently there are six vessels from Kochi and Calikut, also in Kerala, to Lakshadweep.
