The construction of the luxurious 23-floor hotel started in 1970 and took 3 years to complete what became Bangkok's tallest building and landmark of that time. It was also an important step up in standards for the Thai hotel chain, Dusit Thani, which with the new high-rise property reached the international levels. It was innovative in many ways – featuring opulent designs, the hotel offered one of a kind experience with its doormen wearing Thai traditional costumes and huge suits decorated in Lanna, Sukhothai, Lopburi and Ayutthaya styles.
Since 1977 Dusit Thani Bangkok was home to the popular Bubbles discoteque and then saw a classy fine-dining restaurant Tiara doubbling as a cabaret venue opening on its rooftop. Mayflower, a Chinese restaurant occupying the first floor was a favourite among the rich and beautiful.
