The highway is one of the two major projects in Quang Ninh Province and about USD570 mln was spent to complete it. With a much anticipated new international airport east of Ha Long City which is due to accept its first flight soon, travelling to the UNESCO World Heritage site will become even easier.
Last year, the province of Quang Ninh welcomed 9.97 mln tourists with the lion's share accommodated at Halong Bay. It is expected that the new infrastructure including the highway and the airport will make it possible to receive up to 12 mln visitors in 2018.
A 1553 sq km Ha Long Bay featuring over 2,000 limestone islets is the major tourist attraction in Vietnam. In 1994, it was listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage Site list for its outstanding, universal aesthetic value. In 2012, together with Amazon Rainforest and River in the South America, Jeju island in the South Korea, Iguazu Falls in Brazil and Argentina, Puerto Princesa Subterranial River National Park in the Philippines, Komodo Island in Indonesia and Table Mountain in the South Africa, Ha Long Bay was officially recognized as one of the New Seven Natural Wonders of the world by New 7 Wonders Foundation.
