150th Anniversary of Solar Eclipse Observation to Be Celebrated in Prachuap Khiri Khan

The 150th anniversary of solar eclipse observation by King Mongkut at Wa Ko will be celebrated in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand, on August 18-24 in the King Mongkut Memorial Park of Sience and Technology Wa Ko.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, and Prachuap Khiri Khan province and will feature a variety of activities, including cycling races, walk-run activity, quiz games and more. The visitors will get acquainted with the story behind the foundation of the memorial park, which was established in 1989 to commemorate King Mongkut Rama IV who is regarded as father of modern science in Thailand.

The place where King Mongkut observed a total solar eclipse in 1868 is now occupied by a science museum which contains educational sections, an aquarium and a butterfly garden. During the event the museum and the area around it will turn into an educational city divided into various zones such as astronomy, energy, environment and underwater world. The whole event aims at promoting the idea of sustainable tourism and the importance of astronomical theories in this aspect.
