A 9-kg cutie is the second cub of Liang Liang, a female panda loaned to the zoo together with her male mate Xing Xing from China in 2014. It is an extremely rare success story of natural reproduction of giant pandas who are – well, let's put it straight – often to lazy to mate.
Liang Liang's first cub, Nuan Nuan, who was born in August 2015 was sent to China last November following the loan agreement between the two countries. Her sister will joing her in the course of two years. Currently the baby panda feeds on her mother's milk.
Native to the mountains of central China, giant pandas are considered very vulnerable as due to deforestration they have been driven out of their natural habitat and thus their population remains low regardless the preservation efforts undertaken. Pandas do not breed well in captivity and thus the successful experience of the couple of giant pandas in the Malaysian zoo is especially important. The maintenance of the panda centre costs the Malaysian zoo's authorities USD14,000 a month.
