Smelly Delicious: Durian Season Is On in Cambodia

The harvesting season for the 'king of fruits', durian, arguably the most controversal fruit delicacy is under way in Cambodia.

The local demand for this rather stinky but irresistably delicious treat stands high and even though this year's rainy season has already brought a lot of rain and the yeild is expected to be good, it is still not enough to provide the necessary supply. It means that prices will remain high in the market. Currently 1 kg of durian is sold at over USD6 in the market and the price will hardly drop below that mark.

There are different varieties of durian available on the market with some of the most popular ones sourced from Stung Hao district in Preah Sihanouk province, Kampot and Kampong Cham provinces, as well as Koh Kong and Ratanakkiri.

To meet the market demand, farmers try to produce more fruit each year. Last year, in Kampot province alone, durians were cultivated on 945 hectars with each hectar producing in media over 9 tonns of the fruit.

The durian season in Cambodia runs from May through the end of July so the durian lovers have a couple of months ahead to treat their taste buds.
