The international railway link between the border town of Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaeo province, Thailand and Poipet, Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia will probably be launched before August this year. It has been already decided that the route will be served by a three carriage passenger-only disel train but the number of trains per day yet to be stated.
The railway link between these two destination did existed from 1942 until the whole railway system in Cambodia was heavily damaged during the Khmer Rouge period.
The eventual aim of the project is to provide regular railway link between Bangkok and Phnom Penh. While there is already a functioning railway line on the Thai side from Bangkok to Sa Kaeo, it is still a long way before the Cambodian part is rebuilt.
The government of Cambodia with financial support from the Asian Development Bank and two Australian companies, Australian Agency for International Development and Toll Group are currently putting a lot of effort to bring the railways of Cambodia to life again. In April 2016 train services linked Phnom Penh and the seaside town of Sihanoukville and later Battambang and Poipet were also connected by rail.
