The possibility of building an environmentally friendly rail link was discussed in the frame of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ intention to push development of 90 smart cities and Thailand governmental policy of ‘Thailand 4.0’. The new monorail system will function on lithium batteries and thus help save energy and avoid air pollution. Cars will be added during the peak hours and seasons and their number will be reduced during off-season what is crucial for keeping the operation costs under control.
The airport of Hat Yai is one of the six largest airports in Thailand operated by AOT. With passenger flow constantly rising it is of crucial importance to provide convenient transport solutions connecting the airport with the city. Residents, businessmen and tourists alike will benefit from the effeciency and convenience of the monorail. As the monorail cars are quite compact and the poles supporting the rail are not huge, the monorail will not negatively affect the existing transportation system.
Currently World Green International and King Mongkut’sInstitute of Technology Thonburi are carrying out the studies on feasibility ofthe project. The private sector have already shown their interest in supportingthe project.
