Bangladesh Experiences Urgent Need for Infrastructure for Tourism Growth

Bangladeshi Hoteliers say infrastructure plays an important role in tourism business, so it should be improved significantly to change the situation in tourism.

The economy of the country is starting to develop. The government is planning to revive railways and roads, which have been neglected for a long time, not only in the capital, but in the rest of the country, too. Dhaka, the capital, is becoming more popular with business travellers and international tourists and they are going to start a Mass Transit System to ease the problem of traffic jams constructing some flyovers in the city.

Modernization of railways is also on the way, especially between the capital and the main port, Chittagong. The authorities rightly suppose that when infrastructure has been created, tourism will flourish.

One more point is important – that is taxation. At present luxury cars and coaches required by tourists are taxed 400 per cent. Alcohol tax is also very high – 700-800 per cent. There are requests to bring the taxes down. Now there are 35 hotels with 2000 three star and 1000 four and five star rooms ready to participate in the country’s take off.
