Asia’s Large Tulip Garden Opened for Tourists in Srinagar, India

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opened its gates for tourists on March 25 for the annual tulip blossoming. It is the largest tulip garden in India.

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is the largest tulip garden in India. It is situated in Srinagar near Dal Lake. First opened in 2007, it has become a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir

Growing tulips is hard work which lasts almost all year round and results in lush flowering at the end of March and opening of a tourist season. Over 40 varieties of tulips are represented here. The visitors are delighted to see rows of colourful plants bringing joy and tender emotions. To make this dream come true about 130 workers work hard the whole year round. When the tulips wither in June they dig out their bulbs, sort and put them in special conditions with temperature around 15° C. No bulb escapes passing through the careful workers’ hands. It is a very time-consuming job. The bulbs are then kept there until the second half of November when the time comes to plough the earth and to plant them again. This process ends by January. By the end of March people can enjoy multi-coloured flower-beds again. Daffodils, hyacinths and other bulb flowers have been added this year.
