Island Beaches of Southeast Asia Closed for Summer

The ecological situation in the Souteast Asia region presents a cause for serious concern: climate change, tourist flow and irresponsible attitude to nature lead to decline of biodiversity and environmental degradation.

Species populations and the habitat availability are decreasing. Decisive steps shouldbe taken to reverse it notwithstanding the loss of income from tourism and the loss of tens of thousands of jobs.

Thus, Maya Bay of the very well-known Phi Phi islands around Phuket, made famous by the film The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio, will be closed for four months from June. The Philippines officials are closing Boracay Island for six months at the end of April. The island ecosystems are being destroyed not only by the warming sea, but also bya growing number of tourists, boats and the waste from the hotels polluting the waters. Coral reefs also suffer from the uncontrolled inflow ofvisitors.

Thailand closed several diving sites in 2011 and some islands in the Andaman Sea in 2016. It is recommended to limit the number of visitors to Thailand 22 marine parks to let them recover from damage. The importance of tourism cannot outweigh the preservation of nature for future generations.
