Growing Number of Tourists Might Cause Damage to the Chai Wattanaram Temple in Ayutthaya

The catastrophic increase of tourist visits to the Chai Wattanaram temple of Ayutthaya Historical Park in Thailand from 1,000 to more than 10,000 followed the Thai comedy soap opera Buppae Sanniwas broadcast on Channel 3.

Mainly young people and locals were attracted to the place thanks to the historical scenes.The administration of Ayutthaya Historical Park are seriously concerned that The Chai Wattanaram temple has suffered some damage from the growing number of tourists. Several bricks were broken or spalled on the balcony around the main stupa. The visitors are asked now not to sit, stand or lean against the balcony which makes the base of the Bhudda statue.

The Chai Wattanaram temple is situated on the west bank of Chao Phraya River and is the main attraction of Ayutthaya Historical Park. The temple is designed in Khmer style. The site was deserted after the destruction by the Burmese in 1767, restored at the end of the last century and opened to the public in 1992. Now the attempts are made to preserve it.The park officials claim selling up to 18,000 tickets daily not to count students and pensioners the entrance for whom is free.
