River Transport to Be Developed in Cambodia

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transports of Cambodia there is a plan to organize a number of ports along the Mekong River which will make the delivery of agricultural products and movement of passengers easier.

The question was discussed with the delegation of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica). The agency will conduct a feasibilitystudy on the project.

River transportation is cheaper than any other means oftransport, so they are working on the improvement and further development of waterway transport. It will enable the producers of agricultural goods to deliver their produce outside the country as well. A water taxi which will link Prek Pnov in north Pnom Phen to Takhmao city in Kendal province will most probably begin functioning in April.

Tourists will also benefit from the improvement of water transport, though at present there is a lack of piers in coastal provinces on the Mekong River, so the flow of tourists travelling along the Mekong River can be increased. Its economic profitability is evident. The new project was welcomed by Thoun Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), but at the same time he reminded the government about the necessity of the development of land transport.
