The change was originally introduced on a trial basis in the Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. People’s Committee representative Duong Duc Tuan said the resounding success of the trials was likely to lead to the regulations becoming permanent and a proposal to do this had already been draughted.
Another local councillor, Nguyen Quyet Thang, noted that late-night businesses had reported 60 per cent increases in revenue over the past year and had paid taxes accordingly. Speaking to Vietnam News, Spanish tourist Jose Pradas said he loved the late opening and enjoyed Hanoi’s nightlife. He noted it was a bonus for jetlagged visitors whose body clocks were still stuck in their own time zones.
