Thai prime-minister says Royal Cremation site will open for visitors

Thailand’s prime-minister says the Royal Cremation site in Bangkok will be open to the general public until the end of next month.  General Prayut Chan-o-cha made the announcement during a speech aired on national television yesterday.

He explained that King Maha Vajiralongkorn had given permission for the Royal Crematorium site of his late father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, to be opened. Public visits will be allowed from Thursday onwards. At the end of November, the Royal Crematorium and the exhibition centre will be taken down.

The crematorium is located in Bangkok’s Sanam Luang Park and close to the Grand Palace. In his speech, the prime-minister noted that an estimated 10 million people had been to the Grand Palace to offer their respects during the year-long period of mourning for King Bhumibol.

The Royal Cremation on the 26 October was part of a five-day ceremony which ended the period of mourning. 12GO ASIA notes that Bangkok and Thailand should now be returning to normal and the Loy Krathong Festival this weekend will take place as scheduled.
