Storms, heavy rain forecast for southern Gulf of Thailand coast

Thailand’s Meteorological Division says storms and heavy rain will lash the southern half of the Gulf of Thailand this week. The forecast released on Saturday stated that the bad weather would likely hit yesterday and continue through until Thursday at least.

The areas affected will be from Chumpon downwards and of such a severity the weather people say flash floods and landslides are a distinct possibility. The forecast notes that pressure and monsoon conditions will cause waves of two to three metres high during the storms although these will die down once the weather calms.

Disaster authorities in Chumpon have asked the skippers of small boats not to set sail during the period to 3 November. They also say amphur district offices need to ensure dykes and other drainage channels are clear of debris and vegetation so the flow of excess rainwater is not blocked.

12GO ASIA’s travel team explains that there are no delays to public transport at the moment. The team says taking the train to Chumphon and Suratthani is maybe a better choice than the bus this week. Another option is to fly to Chumphon, Suratthani or Koh Samui
