Ministers sign contracts for development of hi-speed rail links in Thailand

Thailand’s transport-minister oversaw the official signing of contracts to build the country’s first hi-speed rail line on Tuesday. Akhom Termphittayapaisit was in Beijing to witness the exchange of contracts which will see China provide the technical knowhow to build the system.

The agreements will see tracks linking Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima built. The 250km connection is the first phase of a 870km-long line which will eventually reach Nong Khai and the Mekong River border with Laos.

The agreements could see work begin as early as next month although this is likely to be later judging by the track record of the project so far. The initial proposal was put forward in 2014 but it has taken until now to reach a formal agreement and exchange contracts.

The State Railway of Thailand’s Anon Luengboriboon noted that the Thai Department of Highways would be laying the first 3.5km section of the tracks. The governor added that the remainder of the 250kms would be put out to tender.
