Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh train services back to normal

Trains running between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are back on track following a derailment on Sunday. The derailment close to Ngan Son Station meant passengers on southbound services to Ho Chi Minh had to be transferred to the next station down the line, Dong Hoi.

The North-South line was closed for 12 hours. Vietnam Railways tweaked train times and laid on transfers while the operation to remove the three derailed carriages and associated debris took place. Although the line opened again on Sunday, speed restrictions of 5kph through Bo Trach District are still in place.

Witnesses say the train was derailed by an excavator driver trying to cross a level-crossing just as the train was passing through. The driver of the digger plus two passengers on the train were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

12GO ASIA says trains through Ngan Son will be running slower and this might slow down other services on the line for the next few days. The team notes that flying or the bus are alternative options for people travelling between Hanoi and Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.
