Samut Sakhon to launch Gulf of Thailand whale spotting cruises

Local marine authorities in Samut Sakhon are preparing to inaugurate Gulf of Thailand whale spotting cruises. The cruises will take visitors to a well-known spot in the gulf which whales are known to frequent plus other notable maritime sights in the locality.

On a recent jaunt to promote the new activity, passengers were taken to a whale-watching site 16kms offshore. The trip was not a disappointment as all on board managed to catch glimpses of a pair of Bryde's whales frolicking in the sea.

The mother and calf are so well known to local fishermen and marine biologists they have even been christened. Mum is Wan Dee and the youngster is Wan Mai. Provisional cruise itineraries show boats would probably depart from Pak Khlong Pramong Village and take in fish farms and the Maha Samut Statue as well as whale sites.

12GO ASIA explains Samut Sakhon is an easy day excursion from Bangkok as the two are less than 60kms apart.  It is possible to take an organised tour or arrange a DIY one by taking one of the Mahachai Railway trains. Trains on this unattached segment of the Thai rail network depart from Bangkok’s Wong Wian Yai station.
