Saraburi temple holds flowers merit making festival

One of Thailand’s most historic temples is preparing to hold an annual festival designed to usher in the forthcoming period of Buddhist Lent. Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi Province will mark the auspicious occasion with its beautiful Tak Bat Dokmai rites from tomorrow until Sunday.

Dok Khaosa is Saraburi’s provincial flower and it is always in full bloom at the start of the wet season. Local residents and tourists amass the golden blossoms and place them in the alms bowls of monks as a means of garnering merit.

Visitors are able to give the flowers to the monks as they pass in parades on their early morning alms collecting rounds. In the afternoons, there is a second opportunity at Wat Phra Phutthabat when the monks gather around to pray and offer their respects’ to the temple’s footprint of the Lord Buddha.

Both the Thai national tourism bureau and 12GO ASIA say Tak Bat Dokmai is a festival which should be high on everybody’s wish list. 12GO ASIA is the way to go when booking travel to Saraburi. You have a choice of train from Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok or private-hire car or passenger van.
