Debut Myanmar cable car to open at landmark Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda

Contractors in charge of installing Myanmar’s first cable-car system say their work is almost done and it should be ready to open on schedule. The system is being built at Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda and is due to open sometime in October.

The cable-car line will transport Buddhist pilgrims from the pagoda’s car park in eight-person gondolas. Sky Asia is overseeing the project and a company spokesperson noted that the deadline for completion is the end of next month.

U Myo Wai continued by saying contractors would be doing live tests on the system for three-months to ensure it was airworthy and passed safety checks. The management body in charge of operating the cable-car system once it gets off the ground has even set passenger fares.

Myanmar nationals will pay MYK3,000 (US$2.2) while international tourists will pay US$5. 12GO ASIA says Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda is in the Mon State town of Kyaikhtiyo and about 200kms by road from Yangon.

The pagoda is known as the Golden Rock due to the fact its main feature is a golden chedi perched on top of a huge rock covered in gold leaf. The rock is in turn balanced precariously on top of a cliff. The site is one of Myanmar’s most famous tourist and religious destinations.
