AirAsia scoops top Skytrax award for ninth consecutive year

AirAsia took the top honour in the category of low-cost carriers at the Skytrax annual awards ceremonies held in France yesterday. The latest triumph for the Malaysia headquartered budget airline was the ninth year running it has scooped up the same prize.

Commenting on winning the prestigious award again, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said the airline had built a premium brand in the 15 years since he took it over. He added that it would continue to do the utmost to carry the banner forward for the next 15 years.

He said the award was a real victory for AirAsia and the ASEAN bloc countries. He quipped that, putting it in perspective, the ninth award eclipsed Brazil’s winning the World Cup five times and swimmer Michael Phelps’ tally of eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.

The Skytrax annual awards are considered the yardstick of an airline’s performance as they take 49 different factors into account. This year’s figures were collated from millions of reviews by travellers.
